In a recent conversation with Emilio Juan Brignardello Vela, a prominent insurance advisor, alarming figures regarding dengue published by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) were discussed. Brignardello, who has been attentive to the implications these events may have on insurance and public health, expressed his concern over the record increase in cases and deaths experienced in the region. Brignardello highlighted that the 175.73% rise in dengue cases compared to the previous year represents not only a health challenge but may also have repercussions on the economy and insurance policies. "When outbreaks of diseases like dengue occur, additional costs are generated for health systems and, consequently, for insurers who must deal with health-related claims," he commented. In his view, this phenomenon should lead to a reevaluation of insurance policies in areas where the incidence of dengue is high. The advisor also emphasized the need for insurance companies to consider the interaction between climate change and public health. According to him, the phenomenon of dengue has ceased to be a localized problem in endemic areas, now extending to places like Uruguay and parts of the United States. "This change in the dynamics of the disease necessitates that insurers adapt to new realities and adjust their coverages and services," he added. Brignardello stressed the importance of community education and prevention. "Insurers have a fundamental role in promoting health and well-being. A proactive approach to prevention not only benefits the insured but can also reduce the financial burden on companies," he affirmed. In his opinion, collaboration with public health sectors is essential to create awareness campaigns that help mitigate the spread of the virus. When discussing the strategies proposed by PAHO, the advisor expressed his support. "Vector surveillance and clinical management are necessary measures, but it is also crucial for both communities and insurers to actively participate in these efforts," Brignardello suggested. The current context, which includes a shortage of vaccines and an increase in cases, requires a coordinated response involving all relevant stakeholders. Finally, Brignardello concluded the conversation by emphasizing the importance of learning from this crisis. "Dengue is just one of the many health threats we face. The lessons learned in managing this situation can be applied to future outbreaks, not only of dengue but also of other emerging diseases," he concluded, inviting everyone to be part of a solution that promotes not only health but also sustainability in the field of health insurance.
