In a remarkable display of medical expertise and teamwork, a team of doctors at the Manur Multispecialty Hospital in Kalaburagi has successfully performed a complex surgery on a 65-year-old kidney cancer patient whose illness had progressed to a critical stage. The patient’s cancer had spread to the main blood vessel connected to the heart, presenting a significant risk during the surgical intervention. At a media conference on Sunday, Farooq Manur, the hospital's Managing Director, provided insights into the patient’s background and the challenges faced during the procedure. The patient presented with an extensive history of chain smoking and alcohol consumption, factors that contributed to the development of his kidney cancer. By the time he arrived at the hospital, the disease had advanced to stage three, leading to severe complications. “Upon admission, the patient reported troubling symptoms, including blood dilution while urinating and intense abdominal discomfort that he had endured for several months,” Dr. Manur explained. He noted that the patient also had a complex medical history, including diabetes, hypertension, and pulmonary tuberculosis, which necessitated careful planning and precautions before surgery. The surgical procedure, lasting an intensive eight hours, was executed by surgical oncologist Dr. Arun Kumar Barad and his dedicated team. The proximity of the cancer to the main blood vessel leading to the heart posed significant challenges, yet the team navigated this precarious situation skillfully. “Operating on this patient was particularly difficult due to his advanced cancer stage and an alarming haemoglobin level of just 5 g/dL,” Dr. Barad shared. “Given the patient’s diagnosis of tuberculosis at the same time, we faced numerous risks. However, we managed to complete the surgery successfully, which was essential for the patient’s survival.” Emphasizing the seriousness of the patient's condition, Dr. Manur stated, “Patients in such critical scenarios can often succumb to their illnesses within months if surgical intervention is not pursued. It was heartening to see the patient’s family recognize the urgent need for the surgery despite their concerns regarding his advanced age.” This case underscores the intricate balance between risk and necessity in surgical oncology, particularly for older patients who may hesitate to undergo invasive procedures. The successful outcome serves as a testament to the skill and dedication of the medical professionals involved. Intensivists Muzzammil Ahemad and Satish Sharanappa were also key members of the surgical team, contributing their expertise to ensure the patient's safety and recovery. As the patient continues to recover, the hospital team expresses hope for his future and emphasizes the importance of timely medical intervention in combating life-threatening diseases such as cancer.
