The University of Cape Coast (UCC) recently celebrated a significant milestone at its 57th Congregation, where a total of 14,643 students graduated over a span of five days from December 9 to 13, 2024. This impressive cohort comprised graduates from various colleges within the university, reflecting UCC's broad academic reach and commitment to education. Among the graduates, the College of Health and Allied Sciences was the largest contributor with 4,455 graduates, followed by the School of Graduate Studies with 2,559. The College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and the College of Humanities and Legal Studies contributed 2,513 graduates. The College of Education Studies (Regular and Sandwich) added 3,909 graduates, while the College of Distance Education accounted for 1,407 graduates. This diverse representation exemplifies UCC's extensive program offerings and its role in shaping skilled professionals across multiple disciplines. During the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong delivered a compelling message urging graduates to embrace entrepreneurial initiatives rather than solely relying on government employment. He emphasized the importance of job creation and lifelong learning as crucial components for personal and professional growth. His remarks, conveyed by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Rosemond Boohene, underscored the necessity of building professional networks, staying informed about current trends, and actively participating in alumni activities. In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of its graduates, UCC also addressed its ongoing infrastructural challenges. Despite recent developments, including the completion of several building projects and enhancements to the campus road network, the university struggles with inadequate residential facilities. This shortfall poses significant security risks for students. In response, the university is collaborating with the local branch of the Ghana Universities Staff Superannuation Scheme to expand student accommodation. UCC's commitment to global engagement was also highlighted, with management announcing the finalization of several bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with international partners. This strategic move aims to enhance the university's visibility on a global scale and to foster collaborative opportunities that enrich the educational experience for its students. The occasion also saw the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on three distinguished individuals: Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, Oguaamanhen; Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, a former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States; and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene. This recognition reflects the university's appreciation for individuals who have made significant contributions to society. Additionally, UCC introduced the Switch 3.1 programme—a career-oriented initiative tailored for professional graduate teachers, designed to align educational offerings with national development priorities. This program aims to bridge gaps in teaching expertise across various subjects, thus enhancing the quality of education in Ghana. As UCC continues to assert its position as the leading university in Ghana and West Africa, ranked among the top 15 in Africa by the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, the institution is dedicated to nurturing an environment of collaboration and innovation.
