Lucy O'Shea, a resident of Caheriveen, is on a mission to raise awareness and funds for the night nursing service provided by the Irish Cancer Society, a service that played a crucial role in her family's journey following the loss of her father, Tim O'Shea, to cancer in April 2023. Lucy reflects on her father's passing, emphasizing the invaluable support her family received from night nurse Agnes Horan during that difficult time. "In April 2023, our lovely dad Tim O'Shea passed away quietly at home just before midnight. I feel there aren't any words to describe the precious gift the night nurses gave our family," she expressed. Lucy recalls how the warmth and expertise of the night nurses offered her family a sense of comfort and assurance, allowing them to focus on cherishing their final moments with Tim. “Until you need their support - until you feel their warmth and witness their amazing expertise - you don't really understand just how incredible they are. We just knew that dad was going to be totally, and tenderly, taken care of,” she added with emotion. As the Christmas season approaches, Lucy finds herself reflecting on the fond memories of her father, who cherished this time of year. “This Christmas season, we will be remembering him and the time we shared together. I urge anyone who can, please donate to the Irish Cancer Society, so that every family can avail of the same vital support we had,” she remarked, highlighting her hope that others in similar situations can receive the compassionate care that her family experienced. Lucy is not alone in her advocacy; she shares her sentiments with notable figures like TV presenter Elaine Crowley, who has also been deeply affected by cancer. Elaine lost her father, Sean, to a rare and incurable cancer when she was just 23, followed by the passing of her mother, Mary V, in 2021 from lung cancer. This past year, her family faced the devastating loss of her nephew, Ultan, who succumbed to cancer at just 11 years old. Elaine is using her platform this Christmas to rally public support for the Irish Cancer Society's services, including the night nursing service that provided comfort to families during their loved ones' final days. Averil Power, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, emphasized the essential role that donations play in sustaining their night nursing service. Last year alone, the society delivered nearly 6,900 nights of care to cancer patients at home, including throughout the Christmas season. “This service would simply not be possible without the incredible generosity of people all over the country who give their support and make donations to the Irish Cancer Society. We typically receive only five percent of our funding from government, meaning the rest comes from individuals and organizations who generously support our work,” Power stated. The plea from both Lucy and Elaine underlines a crucial truth: the Irish Cancer Society's night nursing service relies heavily on the community's generosity. “We want to be there for as many people as possible who need us and to do that, we need your support,” Power concluded. As families prepare for the holidays, the call for donations serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in providing care for those facing the most challenging moments of their lives.
